I originally submitted the necklace idea because there was a design call entitled “Mermaidia” (if I remember correctly) and I thought “Hmmm. My coral and kelp stuff would work for this.”
I’m particularly happy with the two-page interview with me called “When Craft Meets Art” that is in the same issue of the magazine. I was having a back-and-forth email with the editor, Sara Dudek, about materials. I suppose I was being stubborn about using what I had originally submitted. I didn’t want my work to lose its integrity. She must’ve poked around the web and discovered that I am an artist who uses crochet in her work. If you’re curious to read more, pick up the magazine at your local yarn store or online. Thank you, Sara, for being a good “investigative editor!”
It was a challenge for me to figure out how to turn this into a pattern that others could follow. I do this kind of work free-form, but most others (they say) prefer to follow patterns. I do like to teach free-form work, and hey, maybe that will come about someday soon.
